Parliament yesterday May 17, 2018, summoned both Ministers of Defense and Interior to appear before the House to appraise it of the circumstances surrounding the brutalities involving the Police and the Military, and to also brief them on measures being put in place to address the issue and prevent further occurrence.

In a statement made by the Member of Parliament for the area (Tamale), who doubles as the Minority Leader of the House, Hon. Haruna Iddrissu on the Floor of the House on the issue, the Minority leader lamented the growing sense of insecurity in Tamale and Ghana for that matter, arising out of the “insistent violent attacks between members of the Military and the Ghana Police Service.

He indicated that, security remains a primary and secondary need for the peace and stability of the country, and that he is very concerned with Ghanaians about the growing reprisal attacks between the two institutions of state.

He revealed that, the first of it happened on March 26, 2018, in Tamale around the Agricultural Development Bank road, and therefore invited the Speaker to summon the ministers of these two institutions to the house, for them to assure the public that Ghanaians are safe and secured; and in particular, the people of Ghana have no reason to want to live in fear and panic, adding that a breakdown of law and order can be a recipe for lawlessness.

He further indicated that, this phenomenon would lead to (of which he thinks has already begun) the erosion of public confidence in our security agencies to maintain law and order in the country, and to safeguard Ghana’s territorial integrity.

The Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Adwoa Safo on her part, indicated that the leadership had a meeting on the matter, and the Majority Leader also gives support to the call by the Minority Leader for the Ministers to be summoned to the House for same purpose.

She said, every citizen of Ghana deserves the right to life, and when the Police and the Military exchange fire, it is very worrying, adding that “if the personnel that we have entrusted to them to ensure law and order are rather at loggerheads, it is a great disappointment to the people of Ghana.

She further stated that, the action is a disappointment to the people of Ghana, and it is appropriate that the two Ministers come to the House and brief it on how they intend to deal with it.
