The Supreme Court has set 21st Novemeber, 2018, as a date for the hearing of the National Cathedral case, initiated by Mr. James Kwabena Bomfeh.

The Court, at the last adjourned date, ordered the Plaintiff and the Defendant, the Attorney General, to file a joint memorandum of issues.

Counsel for the Plaintiff, Mr. Aziz Can be, has said that he had filed a motion to amend the writ and statement of case filed by the Plaintiff.

The Deputy Attorney General, Mr. Godfred Yeboah Dame, who is representing the Defendant, did not oppose the motion for amendment.

The Court had granted the application for amendment and has ordered the Plaintiff to file the amendment within 3 days.

The Court has ordered the parties to file their arguments simultaneously within a week.

Mr. James Bomfeh, the Director of Elections for the Convention People’s Party (C.P.P) has sued the government over the construction of a National Cathedral.

It is the case of the Plaintiff that it is wrong for organs of the state to be excessively entangled in any religion or religious practice.

The Plaintiff is seeking a declaration that the decision of the Government of Ghana to purposely endorse, assist, aid, partly sponsor, and/or support the construction of a National Cathedral near the State House of Ghana, for Christian interdenominational church services, amounts to an excessive entanglement of the state and religion and therefore unconstitutional.

Mr. Bomfeh is also seeking a declaration that the setting up of a Hajj Board by the Government of the Republic of Ghana for the purpose of coordinating, supporting and/or aiding Ghanaian Muslims to embark on a religious pilgrimage to Mecca, is unconstitutional.

Mr. Bomfeh has also filed a motion of interim injuction on the construction of the cathedral which is yet to be moved.
