Prof. Afful-Broni as Vice Chancellor will hinder Academic Freedom-Hon. Nortsu Kotoe Cautions
Member of Parliament for Akatsi-North and Ranking member on the Committee for Education, Hon. Peter Nortsu -Kotoe has cautioned that, the continuous stay in office by the new Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education Winneba (UEW) Rev. Fr. Professor Afful-Broni, is bound to create problems for both the government as well as education in Ghana.
Reiterating that, the academic freedom of the University of Education (UEW) will no longer exist, for as long as Professor Afful-Broni maintains his post as Vice-Chancellor of the school.
In an Interview, the Akatsi-North lawmaker sent a passionate appeal to the President Nana Akufo-Addo to dishonor an invitation as guest for the investiture of Rev. Fr. Professor Afful-Broni, which is slated for Monday, September 17, 2018.
Neither should he send the Vice-President Dr. Bawumia or any of his appointees to that ceremony, to save the dignity of the government and education as whole.
“If the President does not heed to my plea and proceeds to the investiture, it would be an insult to education in the country and also confirms the Presidency is behind the turmoil going on at UEW”. Hon. Nortsu Kotoe indicated.
He further called for reform of the University council, due to as it is now they have shown that they are bias.
The University governing council on the 31st of August 2018 made Professor Afful-Broni the substantive Vice-Chancellor.
After five principal officers of the University were dismissed including the dismissed Vice-Chancellor Professor Mawutor Avoke.
Prior to the dismissal, a Winneba High Court in 2017 ordered Professor Avoke, to step aside until a case brought against him and the University’s Governing Council was determined.
In a case brought before the court by one Supi Kofi Kwayera who indicated that the Vice-Chancellor and the Finance Officer were operating under the University’s defunct Governing-Council.
