We can’t alleviate poverty without education – Dr. Letsa
The Volta Regional Minister, Hon. Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, has called on parents to take keen interest in the education of their children, saying, that is the only way to alleviate poverty from society.
Dr. Letsa assured the people of government’s commitment to promote quality education in the Volta Region and Ghana as whole.
The minister also mentioned that, government would commence the free Senior High School policy in September 2017, indicating that, as citizens the only way to curb poverty is through education.
Dr. Letsa was addressing the Chiefs and people of Avatime – Gbadzeme in the Ho – West District of the Volta Region, during their 2017 Easter durbar held on Saturday 15th April, 2017.
Speaking at the event, the Paramount Chief of Avatime Traditonal area, Osie Adzatekpor VII, also assured the Regional Minister that, the Chiefs within the Ho – West district would throw their weight behind anyone who comes to develop the district no matter the political affilliation of the person.
He urged the Regional Minister to eschew politics and concentrate on the development of the region.
He was however not happy about the poor attitude towards work being exhibited by both Teachers and educational authorities in the district.
In his welcome address, the Chief of Avatime – Gbadzeme, Okusie Okoforobour Agyemang VII, complimented teachers and the school management committee of the Avatime – Gbadzeme Junior High School for raising the standard of teaching and learning in the school.
These, He mentioned, has seen the school rise through from scoring Zero (0) % in the 2015 Basic Education Certificate Examination (B.E.C.E.) to the fouth (4th) position in the 2016 B.E.C.E.
He noted among other things, the policy of boardinizing final year students as some of their actions which did the magic for them.
As part of activities to mark the celebration, a Ten (10) seater WC toilet facility built through a self help program was commissioned by the Regional Minister.
In a related development, the Regional Minister told the Chiefs and people of Ho – West district that, government would tab into the tourist attraction sites within the district in order to bring development in the district and also attract investors into the district.
Dr. Letsa also urged the people of the district to take advantage of the many opportunities being offered by government such as the ‘ Planting For Food and Jobs’ policy to venture into agriculture, since they have fertile lands.
He made the call during the 2017 Easter fund raising durbar by the people of Abutia held on the same day at Abutia – Agove.
The Regional Minister also promised to take a critical look at completing the road which links Sokode to Juapong, which started during Ex- President Kufour’s regime.
Dr. Letsa also acknowledged the fact that, portable water has been a challenge for the people of Abutia and therefore hinted that, government is considering of constructing boreholes to supply them with portable water, or to connect the Abutia community to Ghana Water Company’s lines at Kpeve, on the same purpose.
He seized the opportunity to appeal to the people of Abutia and the region as whole, to help government bring development to the region.
